Greater Tampa Bay Walk to Defeat ALS. The walk is to raise awareness of this terrible disease. • New Diagnoses: Over 5,000 new cases annually in the U.S.. • People Living with ALS: Around 20,000 to 30,000 Americans at any time. • Prevalence Rate: About 1.7 to 2.2 per 100,000 people each year. Who Gets ALS? • Age: Most diagnoses occur between 40 and 70, with an average age of 55. • Genetics: About 90% of cases are sporadic (no family history); the remaining 10% are familial. • Military Veterans: Twice as likely to develop ALS, possibly due to environmental exposures. • The walk is free, open to the public, outdoors & pet friendly. No tickets required. There is no cure for ALS at this time. After being diagnosed, some people last a few months, some several years, but is considered a terminal illness.
